PACE LAB
General Information
Physiologic Testing
Sound physiologic testing is the foundation of any scientifically based training program. It is necessary to perform physiologic testing in order to know where you’re starting from, to track your progress, to determine the efficacy of your training program and how to adjust it to help you accomplish your goals. By testing our athletes in the PACE lab, we are able to establish a clear base line and to set up accurate training zones for heart rate and power based training programs.
Testing lactate threshold and Vo2 max are the cornerstones of training in endurance athletics. Determining your Vo2 max helps outline your potential for the development of your natural abilities. Finding your lactate threshold allows us to design a program to help you tap as much of your potential as possible. Consider your Vo2 your genetic potential (once developed by several years of training) and your lactate threshold (LT) your functional barometer of how much of that potential you have attained.
At PACE, we use several advanced protocols for determining your physiologic strengths and limiters to help you make the most out of your training. Our coaches determine your LT by testing tiny amounts of blood for lactate concentrations while either cycling on a Computrainer ergometer or running on the treadmill using a progressively increasing resistance. We can either use your HR monitor, Garmin device and power-meter to determine power, heart rate, optimal cadence and pace at threshold and Vo2 max, or provide you with one of ours. We utilize the FACT protocol to determine your ability to clear lactate in addition to determining your peak power and power at lactate threshold.
Testing at PACE is an effective, simple and scientific way to help you determine your current level of fitness and design the most effective training program to help you meet and exceed your goals. Find out more below.

Field Testing
In addition to testing your LT and Vo2 in the lab, we can perform field tests that will determine these on the road in addition to finding your ability to sprint (neuromuscular) and to generate maximum power for 1 minute (anaerobic capacity) using a power meter. By testing all of your energy systems we will be able to provide you with a comprehensive overview of your strengths & limiters as a rider. This will help further determine the specific areas that need to be focused on most in your training to help you accomplish your goals. You will be provided with a complete, power-profile that show you what kind of rider you are, where you rank amongst categorized cyclists and to track your progress with over the course of the season.
